Urban Heritage Strategies 2022: Call for applications

This year’s course is tailored to port cities and their water challenges and is open to professionals from Morocco, Egypt, Turkey and the Netherlands.
By Jean-Paul Corten, Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands

Casablanca, Alexandria and Istanbul will partner with Amsterdam in this year’s course on Urban Heritage Strategies (UHS). These three Mediterranean cities represent respectively Morocco, Egypt and Turkey as new partner countries within the framework of the current International Cultural Policy of the Netherlands (2021-2024).

Port cities and their water challenges

This year’s course is tailored to port cities and their water challenges. Especially port cities face the daily tension between the urge to develop and the need for conservation. The different water challenges come together in these cities, where changing rainwater patterns interfere with fluctuating river flows and sea-level rise; and where issues of flooding meet with issues of drought. Although these challenges are global, the conditions differ largely per city. This will make a peer exchange between the participants from the four countries an enriching experience.

Course in hybrid form

As in earlier editions, the course will be conducted in joint collaboration between the Institute for Housing and Urban Development Studies (Erasmus University Rotterdam) in close cooperation with the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands and the Department of Architectural Engineering of Delft University of Technology. In contrast with earlier editions, this year’s course is offered in a hybrid form. The course will start with an online part in June, focusing on cognitive learning. The second part, scheduled in August, will be conducted face-to-face in the Netherlands and will focus on applicable skills.

Apply for the Urban Heritage Strategies course

The course is open to professionals working in the field of urban development and conservation in Morocco, Egypt, Turkey and the Netherlands. Applicants are required to have knowledge of the case city of their country. Applicants can apply through the Institute for Housing and Urban Development Studies of the Erasmus University Rotterdam.

Deadline applicants: 15 April (for Dutch applicants the deadline is April 25th).
