long description
The installation Spice Winds was the result of a collaboration between the designer teams Studio Toer (NL) and mcdermott baxter (AU). It used way-finding directional lights and the kinetic energy of the wind to pay homage to Dirk Hartog and his fellow Dutch East India Company sailors and their skills in traversing the treacherous seas of the Southern Hemisphere along the strong westerly winds known as the ‘Roaring Forties’. Orange flags directed the lights to illuminate the surroundings and the audience in accordance with the wind. The Spice Winds installation was part of VIVID Sydney, a cultural festival which combines light, music and ideas.
