400th anniversary of Dirk Hartog's landing
The Cape Inscription Committee plans to hold a major international ceremony at Cape Inscription, Dirk Hartog Island, on 25 October 2016, to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Drik Hartog's visit to that place in 1616. The restoration of the lighthouse keepers' quarters need to be completed well before then.
OBJECTIVES
Firstly the project aim is to complete, before 2015, restoration of the Lighthouse Keepers' Quarters at Cape Inscription, Dirk Hartog Island. The quarters are about 100 m. from the crack in the rock used by Dirk Hartog to erect his post and plate in 1616. The quarters will then become a musuem, visitors' centre, and warden's quarters.
The second objective is to hold a major international commemorative event at Cape Inscription on 25 October 2016, to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Dirk Hartog's landing. The Cape Inscription area was also the site of landing by other famous Dutch, Frech, and British explorers during the 17th, 18th, and 19th century.
A book is intended to be published outlining the stories of the successive explorers.
