Answers after Brexit

The UK has left the European Union on 31 January 2020, and only 5 days after the withdrawal DutchCulture organizes an event to inform you about the impact on cultural exchange with the country. Avoid Brexit blues and get answers from our experts to all your questions related to mobility, funding, partnerships, transport and other legal challenges surrounding the future relationship between the UK and the EU.

How will Brexit affect the Dutch cultural sector? What are the practical implications of the withdrawal of the UK from the European Union and how can you prepare for them? Can my band tour freely around the UK? How can my gallery export artworks to a British art fair? Are my contracts still legally valid with my UK partners?

These and more questions will be discussed during the event on February 5. The UK stays a priority country in the Netherland’s international cultural policy for the 2021-24 period. This means that the Dutch government is dedicated to strengthen the cultural ties with our North Sea neighbor. By attending our event you can learn not only about the challenges but also about the opportunities Brexit delivers.

Rogier van Tooren, Senior Policy Officer, Taskforce UK/Brexit, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, NL

As a Senior Policy Officer and founding member of the Brexit Taskforce at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Rogier van Tooren is an expert on the relations with the United Kingdom. Rogier is responsible for preparations and strategic communication for Brexit.Embassy of the Netherlands in the UK.

Roel van de Ven, Cultural Attaché, Embassy of the Netherlands in the UK

Roel van de Ven works at Dutch Embassy in London as head of the Culture, Education and Communication Department.

Roel studied International and European Law at Leyden University. From 1986-1998 he worked at the T.M.C Asser University Institute for International and European Law in The Hague as researcher and deputy director. In 1998 Roel van de Ven joined the Netherlands Ministry of Education, Culture and Science as advisor in the fields of culture -and media policies. From 2005 till 2008 he worked as a counselor for culture and education at the Netherlands Permanent Representation to the European Union in Brussels.

Arnoud Breitbarth, editor of the publication North Sea Neighbours

Arnoud Breitbarth is a lyricist, composer and playwright who mainly works in the United Kingdom and the Netherlands. Before moving to the creative sector, he worked as a financial journalist for over 15 years for Dutch daily De Telegraaf, for which he was the UK correspondent for the from 2010 to 2014. After a stint in geopolitical public relations, he realised he needed to change course. Breitbarth decided to follow his passion for musical theatre when he was offered a place on a Master of Arts degree in Writing Musicals at London’s Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts.

He graduated with distinction in 2016 and has been writing shows since. His work focuses on the pursuit of one’s genuine identity. Forgive Us, Oh Father! (co-written with Harry Style) explores ideas around morality and mortality. Catch Me (co-written with Christian Czornyj) deals with the aftermath of a suicide. During the last few years Breitbarth has been developing Brothers, a story about loss, love and sexuality, based on the award-winning novel Gebr. by Ted van Lieshout. Dr Janice McNab, artist (UK/NL) and head of MA Artistic Research, The Royal Academy of Art, The Hague

Janice McNab received her doctorate from the Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis at the University of Amsterdam. Janice’s ongoing artistic research has been widely exhibited, and continues this enquiry into non-objectifying visualisations of women’s embodied experience. Her work has been shown in museums, galleries and artist spaces including at Tramway, Glasgow; The Essl Collection, Vienna; The Prague Biennial; Mois de la Photo, Montreal; Talbot Rice Gallery, Edinburgh; De Vleeshal, Middelburg; BAK, Utrecht; The Pump House, London; Gallery of Modern Art, Glasgow; Museum am Ostwall, Dortmund and Kunsthaus Baselland, Basel.

McNab graduated from the MFA at Glasgow School of Art in 1997, and before her current position, worked as a thesis supervisor at The Gerrit Rietveld Academy, Amsterdam and Piet Zwart Institute, Rotterdam. She was also a books editor at If I Can’t Dance, Amsterdam.

Susanne Mooij, co-founder and partner at Adam & Wolf immigration lawyers

Susanne Mooij has been practicing Dutch and European immigration law since 2007. Prior to becoming co-founder and partner of Adam & Wolf, she practiced immigration law for nine years with Everaert Immigration Lawyers in Amsterdam. Susanne’s clientele consists of Highly Skilled Migrant Workers, professionals in the creative industries, such as artists, musicians, dancers, as well as, sport professionals. Susanne also specializes in counseling entrepreneurs who wish to reside and set up businesses in The Netherlands, especially those from the United States and Japan. Furthermore, she assists Dutch expats who wish to return to The Netherlands.

Mooij is a well-known expert on Dutch Nationality Law. The media, politicians and interest groups of former Dutch nationals regularly ask her to comment on the latest developments in this ever-changing area of law.
