long description

With the project Wakaman walks the artists Remy Jungerman, Gillion Grantsaan and Michael Tedja truly let the Wakaman (literally: 'walking man') walk. The projects focuses on art of non-western people that are living in the West and have encountered problems with regard to categorization, recognition and interpretation. The artists focus on the exchange of work and concepts. The project will result in an exhibition in the Netherlands and a website. Michael Tedja will particularly focus placing issues on Diaspora and displacement in a more international perspective. Jungerman, Grantsaan and Tedja have collected all the visual material of their 2005 Wakaman exhibition in TENT Rotterdam and are bringing it in its entirety to Suriname.
In addition they are organizing a debate. After this will follow a work period in Suriname in the second quarter of 2007. The second Wakaman exhibition will then return from Suriname to the Netherlands. The final stage is the publication of a book.
