This study compares and contrasts the simultaneous transition from slavery to freedom in two distinct sea-island cotton districts of the nineteenth century: St. Simons Island, Georgia (US), and Coronie, Surinam. Specific emphasis will be placed on the various economic, political, and social expectations of freedom entertained by black people in both societies.
