long description

There are eight war cemeteries in Indonesia (Ambon, Mentung Pulo, Ancol, Candi, Pandu, Leuwigajah, Kalibanteng, Kembang Kuning) where Dutch victims from the Second World War are buried, soldiers but also women and children. The Oorlogsgravenstichting (Foundation for War Burials) maintains these cemeteries and in Indonesia they have their own office. On the burial field Kembang Kuning there is a memorial for those soldiers who have died in a sea battle, among these Dutch soldiers are also 93 Indonesian soldiers honoured. The war cemeteries are mutual cultural heritage, but there are no projects known of real involvement between the Oorlogsgravenstichting and Indonesian partners. The office of the Foundation in Jakarta however has 130 Indonesian employees.
