Assistance to private house owners in Galle Fort
Buildings in Galle Fort belong to different time periods and different traditions. The area of the fort is about 90 acres and most of the buildings are situated in small land blocks. Unfortunately, most of these buildings are crumbling because of the lack of technological renovations. There are 11 streets that are connected in Galle as a network and the buildings in these streets belong to the government, to the private sector and to individuals. About 60 % of the dwelling houses are not renovated but repaired and maintained in its original nature. Unfortunately, these buildings are in bad state due to the low income of the people who live in them. Scopes of this project are:
- Physical conservation of old buildings
- Developing the cultural status that suits the Tourist zone
- Developing tourist attraction by ensuring national heritages and to create child and adult educational backgrounds
The conservation of the ancient houses are implemented in two stages. Stage 1 involves a preliminary Survey Programme for the owners of the houses and awareness programmes through seminars, exhibitions, festivals and establishment of Representative Committees. Stage 2 involves conservation activities of the buildings and post supervision and future maintenance.
