1893 Statue in Burgerdorp (Eastern Cape) for the Dutch language
This is the only monument for ‘Dutch’ as language, and also the oldest language memorial in the world. However, the monument is at present unknown to the (Dutch-speaking) public. The project consists of several phases. Phase 1: research into the origin and history of this obscure monument to be published in book format in Dutch (with numerous illustrations). Phase 2: subsequent popularisation of research by way of scientifically verified brochures in different languages, information on the internet and information on the site of the statue in Burgersdorp; possibly also a television documentary. As Dutch speaking tourists form the third largest group of foreign tourists to South Africa after English and German speakers, publicity surrounding the Burgersdorp statue could have a positive effect on the heritage tourism to Burgersdorp.
